  • Removal of Flash support ๐Ÿ˜ฆ

If you got the update, tell us how the experience is in the comments section

Rooting QMobile A4 Bolt October 14, 2013

I am greatly disappointed at the out-of-the-box performance of the QMobile A4. Having used a Samsung mobile with similar specs I knew it would not acing any benchmarks , but this was horrible; It had too much bloatware and unnecessary “system apps” . I finally reached a point where I would rather brick/destroy it, rather than use it in its condition. So I set off trying to root it. Got dissapointed again as the methods listed just led to failure after failure. After a lot of luck and finally rooting it, I thought I should share the method online.

NOTE: I do not claim that the process will work for you. It may actually brick your phone. Based on previous experience, I just thought the steps I was taking made sense. So if you decide to proceed with following the steps you alone are responsible:

Steps:

  1. On mobile go to Settings –> Applications and activate “Unknown Sources”. Then go to Settings–> Applications –> Activate “USB Debugging”
  2. Download and install Moborobo (http://www.moborobo.com/)
  3. Connect you phone using USB and make sure that you are connecting using data option in USB settings
  4. wait for Moborobo to completely connect to it. It may take a few minutes so be patient.
  5. When connected, it should recognize your phone as “Qmobile A4”
  6. Use Moborobo to take a backup of your contacts, messages etc. You may use any other software you prefer to take backups also
  7. Download and install SRSRoot (http://www.srsroot.com/)
  8. Most tutorials stated that Moborobo should be exited (not just minimized) before any rooting process but when I tried rooting using SRS it just gave me a “ADB error” and could not find the device
  9. So I turned on Moborobo, connected it completely and then tried using “Smart Root” option on the SRSRoot app and it gave me a “Rooting Successful” message
  10. Close both applications, eject from PC and restart the phone.
  11. If all went well, you should have a “superuser” application on your phone and you can use Moborobo to uninstall the bloatware.

Personally I have uninstalled all

  • QApps (including skype and facebook)
  • the Live Wallpapers (Dessert, Music Visualization etc.)
  • Color memo, digital clock, file explorer
  • Maps and GTalk

Uninstalling the maximum pre-loaded apps allows you to later install better apps with similar features. I’ve not yet touched the LauncherS3 as I’m not sure what havoc it may play on the mobile. So far I’ve got a lot more free RAM (40 – 55 MB) and more internal memory (50MB).

If anyone does try this method, or any other rooting method, do share your experience in the comments. Also if you’ve removed LauncherS3 I would like to know how the phone behaves afterwards.

Update: Removing S3 without another launcher will make the phone unusable. I would suggest trying โ€Smart Launcher 2″ since its fast, light and can be moved to system partition. I would also suggest moving the new launcher to system partition before removing S3 so that you do not brick your phone after factory reset

Once again: FOLLOW THE METHOD ABOVE AT YOUR OWN RISK. ROOTING VOID WARRANTY AND YOU MAY PERMANENTLY DESTROY YOUR PHONE.

Good luck

I noticed that the GPS fix on my Samsung Galaxy Ace S5830 took a long time to get a GPS sattelite lock. Looking around I found this “Faster Fix” application which is simple and helps in improving GPS lock speed. Faster Fix modifies GPS.conf on the phone according to your location to reduce the time required for GPS lock.

NOTE: You need to root your phone and have busybox installed for the fix to work

The latest version of SAS AML has been released with major changes to its working. Keeping its tradition of randomly jumping numbers, the latest release is 5.1; the last one was 4.2 and before that 2.2.1. According to the SAS Support AML page the new stuff is:

  • New analytics process to assist in the reduction of investigative workloads and improve alert quality (Compliance Analytics).
  • Dow Jones Watch List has been added.
  • Clustering of web application has been added so that hardware failure does not prevent end users from continuing to do their work until the problem is resolved.
  • Support for Microsoft SQL Server has been added.
  • Regulatory Console is a new feature to produce regulatory reporting.
  • Network visualization is now available for Funds Tracker.
  • New data management utilities to load data for the solution data model through a graphical user interface

This is a very exciting release and I’m itching to see a demo of it in action. David Stewart explains ‘Compliance Analytics‘ on his blog entry and now you can see the benefit of having an AML solution living on an analytics platform.

Implantable Bio-Sensors: Start of the matrix? February 27, 2012

How would you feel if a sensor planted in your brain was monitoring your vital signs and sending information in real time to your doctor or health insurance company? What if that data is also streamed to your phone? Able to tell when your BP is elevated, or your heart rhythm is erratic; it could send out an SOS.

What if that same sensor was now monitoring your mood and cravings? Sending tweets whenever you think of one ?

โ€œDarpa,โ€ the US Department of Defenseโ€™s (DoD) research agency, is requesting proposals for implantable bio-sensors. They are interested in monioring the biomarkers for the soldiers.

An article on SAS Cusomer Analytics blog, Neuromarketing – creepy relationship management…or just what the doctor ordered?, considers the possibility if this technology gets into commercial side. Its not a far fetched idea since previous brainchilds of “Darpa”, internet and mobile telephone, have gotten into commercial and civilian lives.

PTCL Launches 3G enabled Android 2.2 Mobile Phone January 11, 2012

PTCL has launched the first 3G enabled android phone “IVIO Icon Pro” in Pakistan. Utilising PTCLs’ existing 3G services this device actually allows you to browse using 3G. You can also use the device as a Wi-Fi AP allowing other devices to connect to your phone and browse using 3G. You can use GSM SIM from any service provider so you don’t have to worry about changing your mobile operator.

One of the biggest advantage could be the ability to have simultaneously active data and voice connections. This is a major limitation of GPRS/EDGE; so if you’re downloading a file and someone calls, then either they will get an “error in connection” or your download will be cancelled. This will not be the case with this phone as the data connection will be using the PTCL 3G network while your calls will be handled by the GSM operator.

The device is currently available in 2 packages:

  1. EVO Wind: Smartphone + 15GB data (6 months validity)
  2. EVO Wings: Smartphone + 5GB data (3 months validity)

Subsequent recharges are at Rs. 999 for EVO Wings and Rs. 1999 for EVO Wind

Canadian man uses iPad to enter US January 4, 2012

TORONTO (AP) โ€” A Canadian man who realized he forgot his passport as he approached the U.S. border found a new way to gain entry โ€” his iPad.

Martin Reisch holds up his iPad displaying his passport in MontrealMartin Reisch said Tuesday a slightly annoyed U.S. border officer let him cross into the United States from Quebec after he presented a scanned copy of his passport on his Apple iPad. Reisch was a half hour from the border when he decided to try to gain entry rather than turn back and make a two-hour trek back home to Montreal to fetch his passport.

He told the officer he was heading to the U.S. to drop off Christmas gifts for his friend’s kids. He said that true story, the scanned passport and his driver’s license helped him get through last week.

He said the officer seemed mildly annoyed when he handed him the iPad.

“I thought I’d at least give it a try,” Reisch said. “He took the iPad into the little border hut. He was in there a good five, six minutes. It seemed like an eternity. When he came back he took a good long pause before wishing me a Merry Christmas.”

Reisch said the officer made an exception.

Canadians began needing more than a driver’s license for identification for U.S. land border crossings in 2009. U.S. Customs and Border Protection says it only accepts a passport, an enhanced driver’s license or a Nexus pass from Canadian citizens entering at land crossings. The list doesn’t mention facsimiles, like scans and photocopies.

A spokesman for the department did not immediately respond to questions on whether scanned passports are also commonly accepted at U.S. points of entry.

Reisch, 33, said he took a scanned photo of his passport years ago in case it was over lost or stolen while traveling. He said he also successfully used the passport on his iPad to get through Canadian Customs on the way home later that day.

He said he doubts he’d get away with it again and will bring his passport next time. But he hopes border officials will eventually make digital identification an official form of travel document. He noted that many airlines now accept digital boarding passes stored on smartphones.

“I see the future as 100 percent being able to cross with your identity on a digital device โ€” it’s just a matter of time,” he said.
